Especially at this season more charity letters are arriving at our homes and I would like to share one with you. This was addressed to my son from a charity based in India and arrived by air mail.
The executive director of this charity told my son he could save the sight of a child. Firstly I thought my son is not a surgeon and then I thought - how much money is this director earning and next - can't the Indian government support this sort of thing ? Instead of a charity spending money mailing the rest of the world. Of course they want money for the operation.
How did this little known charity get my son's name ? It did not send the mail to us. My son was left a small bequest in his Grandma's will and decided to donate it as a one off to charity and since then he has been getting begging letters.
Charity letters anyway in my opinion try and extort money from you by moral blackmail. It almost wants to make me stop giving.
What do you think ?

these days you can't believe such letters so go your self to some needy people and donate your self.

I do charity in my own way and hate people pushing it on me to make me feel guilty!

I think it is a fine line, I give to the charities that are close to my heart and have meant something to me, i would love to give more but I also have to live otherwise work would be unbearable. i have volunterred from halping raise money from singing (not pleasant for others), having my head shaved and cooking Christmas lunch in a homeless shelter but there is only so much everyone can do.
I find the letters a little emotionally blackmailing and I understand that they are receiving less since the recession but there must be other ways!

I could not stop giving to charity but have to stick to the ones that I already know as I cannot afford any more. Guess they try the hard sell these days because everyone is desperate for help.

I hate being guilt tripped by charities. I do give to charity, but always directly to the charity concerned, as I know that the money goes to the charity, and not mostly to a third party.

I do think sometimes they can be a bit aggressive- I had some come to the door the other night and I live on my own

I get the ususal stuff through the door and stopped in the street. If I want to donate I will do it my own way and not be cajoled into it.
