Many people tend to believe that teenagers are going to have sex anyway, that’s why it’s better to provide an easier access to condoms. In some European countries condoms are even handed out at schools for free. However, is this measure really helpful in achieving the main purpose of the campaign– to decrease the rates of teen pregnancy and venereal diseases?

Statistics show that distribution of condoms turns out to be not really helpful. The rates are still growing and there are some truly gruesome cases, when teens of 13 or 14 get pregnant. And the reason, in my opinion, is that easy access to condoms does not cultivate safe sex; it cultivates irresponsibility among people. In the times when contraceptives were either ineffective or extremely hard to get, the moral level of society protected teenagers from getting pregnant –there was an understanding that the consequences of having a good time may be very, very unpleasant. Free sexual relations were shunned by society.

Modern teenagers that are taught from the very childhood that sex is completely alright, no matter in what age, with whom or in what circumstances you have it, that you can buy condoms whenever and anywhere, don’t have such preconceptions. They know that all the negative consequences may be easily averted if sex is safe – but it only breeds overall contempt for the above-mentioned outdated preconceptions and the precautionary measures as well.

Easy access to condoms doesn’t and cannot prevent teen pregnancy, for it doesn’t make an influence on the source of the problem; in fact, it only makes it worse. If teenagers don’t understand the seriousness of consequences, social problem will never be resolved

It has become fashionable in the world today to condemn smoking. However, although I feel that smoking can be harmful, I do not think it should be banned completely.

Let me deal first with the positive side of smoking. First, smoking undoubtedly helps many people to relax. For some, it even improves concentration. Many people like to smoke before exams or when they are relaxing with friends. A further point is that governments throughout the world make huge profits from levying taxes on cigarettes. This provides funds which are used for building schools, hospitals and other public amenities. The tobacco industry also employs tens of thousands of people throughout the world, particularly in poorer countries like Zimbabwe or India. Without cigarettes, these people would have no jobs. I would also argue that people should have the right to choose whether they smoke or not. People should not smoke in a room where there are non-smokers but surely they should be free to smoke elsewhere.

However, despite these points, the arguments against smoking are strong. Smoking has been shown to be dangerous to health. Heart disease, bronchitis and lung cancer have all been linked. A further issue is that smoking costs governments millions of pounds because of the large number of people who need treatment in hospitals for smoking related problems. There is also concern today about passive smoking. Recent research has shown that non-smokers can suffer health problems if they spend long periods of time among people who do smoke.

In general, I think the world would be a better place without cigarettes. However, the decision as to whether to smoke or not should be for each individual to make.

Women get maternity leave when there comes time to have a baby. They would normally avail of this leave a couple of days before the delivery date and continue on for a certain period of time after the baby is born. The duration of the maternity leave would differ from country to country and from state to state within the same country. Apart from maternity leave, paternity leave is also available. Not only is the mother allowed to take leave during pregnancy and child birth, but the father is also provided a certain measure of the same benefits.

Some might see this as a good idea, whereas others may feel that it is taking things a little far. Since the mother is inseparably involved in pregnancy and childbirth, it is understandable when she gets maternity leave. But the necessity of paternity leave for a father is not easily understood by most people. Until and unless men go through fatherhood, they may never really understand the role of the man during pregnancy and childbirth.

Just as both man and woman are involved in conception, they both have a part to play during pregnancy and childbirth phases. Of course, the role of a woman is much more important than that of a man, but he also has a part to play, especially in assisting his wife in fulfillment of her role. Especially during the later stages of pregnancy, when a woman finds it difficult to perform many of the regular chores, her husband has to chip in and do her duties. After the baby is born, he might have to take care of his wife as well as of the baby. So, men also need paternity leave, but for the other purposes, still not less important than that of a woman.
