Encourage your family to spit out the toothpaste without rinsing their mouths with water at brush-time. Then the fluoride can continue to protect their teeth.

Just got this email and to be honest i thought the whole point of rinsing was to get rid of not just the now dirty toothepaste inside of your mouth but of the smell it would create and also to help make your clean teeth shine better ?

Should people on benefits be made to do unpaid work?

“If you can work and if you’re offered a job and you don’t take it, you cannot continue to claim benefits. It will be extremely tough.” – David Cameron

Tesco have been accused of exploiting jobless people this week by advertising for unpaid nightshift workers. The job advert said that instead of a salary, the applicant would only receive their Jobseeker’s Allowance (plus expenses). Tesco is one of many shops across the UK which is signed up to Workfare – a government scheme that makes jobseekers work in shops without any pay in order to keep on claiming their unemployment benefits. Though Tesco have blamed the above advertisement on an IT error.

Reports today indicate that the government are currently looking to extend plans to make long-term sick and disabled people work for the same scheme or face a cut in their benefits. Worryingly, people who fall into the affected group could include those with terminal illnesses, as long as they have more than six months to live.

It’s been long-argued that the benefits system in the UK needs an overhaul, and for many years the newspapers have carried stories about people manipulating the system in order to live comfortably while avoiding having to work. The government, and those in favour of the Workfare scheme say that making people “give something back” for their benefits is a way to stop this. It has also been argued that it can provide useful work experience for those who are trying to get a job. But there are also those who argue against the scheme and accuse it of exploiting people who are at their most desperate. Some have questioned whether it’s appropriate for profit-driven retailers to take advantage of the scheme and there are fears that these businesses could abuse the system by sacking paid employees and replacing them with free labour.

But what do you think about the government’s initiative to make people work unpaid for their benefits? Is it a good idea or a bad one and who is getting the most out of it? What changes, if any, are needed in our benefits system at the moment? Do you know anybody who is currently out of work and if so, how do you think these measures might affect them?

I can see both sides of this argument, work experience v exploitation. Apparently a high percentage of these non-paid have been offered full time work at the end of their placement, which has to be a good outcome. The downside though is that most of us see these mega-profit companies as taking advantage of the vulnerable, but at the end of the day if work experience gains an advantage and shows willingness to learn, it has to be beneficial.
