Dowry has always been a socioeconomic issue, not only in India but anywhere it had its roots. As long as people look at this system and think that dowry is their fundamental right - the problem will remain the same. Dowry existed in Europe/America even a few hundred years ago, but those countries have moved past this shameful tradition. In India, still some people think of dowry as a rightful way of gaining some wealth. Women here are often not earning members, that's another reason. Self realization and women empowerment through the means of education and employment are the only ways to eradicate such harmful customs.
