How diligent are you about shredding documents with personal information on them? Do you own a shredder? Do you shred your name/address on junk or other mail? Do you expect businesses to do the same with documents containing your personal information?

I was at the highway department this week and the clerk threw away an unneeded document with personal information on it. I asked her to take it out of the trash can and return it to me. She wasn’t too happy about that but complied with my request. All I could think about was someone digging through the dumpster at night looking for important papers.

I’m very diligent about shredding all papers that have my name, address or any personal information on them even tearing off those portions of junk mail before I recycle the rest of the paper. Yet I’ve seen my neighbor open the mail box and immediately walk over to their recycle bin and dump junk mail in it. I remember when stealing unsolicited credit card mail was a problem and the thieves would apply for those credit cards in your name but change the address.

No shredder, but I have an ID roller stamp my sister gave me, plus I tear all junk mail. Reply

I burn papers every Saturday. I have a shredder, but burning is easier to me. Reply

Yes, I have a shredder. I do expect businesses to keep my personal information personal. Not sure they are very diligent after hearing your story. Seems very lax and lazy on their part that you had to ask these people to shred your information. Reply

I do not currently have a shredder but I save junk mail, etc. and take it to a free shredding event that happens 2 to 3 times a year. Sometimes, I do just tear off my name and address or use black marker to totally mark out important personal info. I do believe a business should have a shredder and use it with anything they are discarding! Reply

I own a crosscut shredder, and I shred everything I receive in the mail that identifies me and any account information, unless it is something I specifically choose to keep. I take especial care, for instance, to shred credit-card offers with either an invitation number or my name on the forms. Reply
