Is YouTube being used as a platform to cause real-world harm?
Closed

In today's modern world, there's no doubt that a lot of the information we digest daily comes from online sources - but just how reliable is it?

Misinformation continues to pose a great problem in the digital era and fact-checking organisations have come together to say that the leading video platform, YouTube, is not doing enough to prevent the spread of it on their platform.

In a letter addressed to the platform's chief executive, Susan Wojcicki, was signed by some 80 groups where they stated it is "one of the major conduits of online disinformation and misinformation worldwide."

Their concerns range from anti-vaccine propaganda to election disinformation and the joint letter saw groups from across the globe calling for tighter action and measures to be taken - from Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas.

The platform is accused of not making enough effort to prevent its platform from being used "to be weaponised by unscrupulous actors to manipulate and exploit others," before stating how "livelihoods have been ruined, and far too many people have lost loved ones to disinformation."

Have you noticed an increase in such content online?

Do you know anybody who has been directly or indirectly impacted as a result of bad information, such as vaccine misinformation, conspiracy theories, or others?

In what ways do you think the platforms on the Internet can better fight this pressing problem?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

It's going to be very hard for YouTube to regulate misinformation, it's up to the users to take everything with a grain of salt
